The only Self-Governed Roma Community in the World ? Shuto Orizari it?s
under the Police pressure
According to several official sources, during the last days, the Roma Mayor
of Shuto Orizari Municipality - FYROM, Mr. Nazdet Mustafa, was facing
problems, his office and house were searched by the Police and several
documents were confiscated, also weapon shooting through the window af a Mr.
Mustafa?s assistant.
As is stated in the letter that was released yersteday, on the 10th of June,
by the Mayor of Shuto Orizari asking for international assistance in solving
the problems encounted, the great deal of pressure and attacks from the
Ministry of Interior Affairs and the Departement of Public Security has
started on the 3rd of June, right after so Mr. Mustafa has attended the CoE
meeting on European Roma Forum issue. ( Mr. Mustafa is a European Roma Forum
Board member)
According to the source presented above, on the 3rd of June the Departement
of Public Income and Taxes prior to the Ministry for Finance has sent teams
to the Municipality of Shuto Orizari in order to conduct a general
supervision and investigation by checking all the administrative database
and financial book keeping without any warrant, announcement or official
reason.
As a reinforcement, the teams were escorted by members of the Ministry of
Interior ? special force members, forensincs and crime technicians ? and
have practically invaded the premises of the Municipality checking the ID?s
of the employees and behaving very rude.
Also, at the same time, the Urban Communal Inspection prior to the Ministry
of Transport and Communication has acted to tear down ?illegally built
sites? in the area of Shuto Orizari (it was known that the MP Amdi Bajram
is building an ?illegal? Mosque in the community). They acted so without any
consultation or coordination with the Municipality organs and departements,
according to them although the citizens showed evidences of ongoing
legalization.
As Mr. Mustafa stated in his letter, it looks like the whole community has
been pointed out, so the Departement for Public Income and Taxes has started
to investigate also the local TV station ?Sutel?, claiming that they have
had certain information of irregularities regarding the Tv?s work and a
respected citizen that is the Manger of the Market from Shuto Orizari has
been arrested by the Police and his house has been checked.
Nevertheless, it looks like is a clear sign of political presure and
tendency to stop any activities that don?t contain the agenda of the rulling
political parties, after so Mr. Mustafa has presented the current situation
of the Roma in FYROM at the previous CoE meeting and the aspects shared on
the session were not according to the criteria of the Macedonian Government.
Also Mr. Mustafa has had several meetings with the representatives of the
political parties in opposition in terms of communication on the forthcoming
parliamentary elections.
The fact that the Municipality is under heavy supervision and control does
not allow it to continue properly the activities and limits the communal
service program which is a great deal of psychological pressure and torture
developed by the members of the Police.
In order to solve the situation, the Romani communities and the Roma Mayor
Mr. Nazdet Mustafa is asking for your support. In case you want to express
your support, please protest against the facts presented above directly to
your National FYRO Macedonian Embassies and to the Council of Europe.
