District Court claims Roma are not suitable to rent accommodation!

Bochum / Germany (RNC Agency) 25.10.1996

Volker Beck spokesman for the Parliamentary Bundnis 90/ Green Party described on Friday in Bonn a District Courts judgment as arrant racism..In a court-case which took place in September and which only came to light on Friday a couple who were giving up their rented accommodation and had suggested to the owner other persons who were willing to take over the rented accommodation and who in turn were rejected ended up in litigation at the Bochum District Court. According to the judgment (case No:38 C 157/96) The judge had ruled that the owner had the legal right to reject persons who were willing to rent the accommodation whom he had described as Roma he gave as his reason for the judgment: Roma are on average unsuitable as renters of accommodation due as the judge said that as an ethnic group they are traditionally unsettled and non residential, and there for the prognosis, for the future was that Roma were unsuitable. A Bochum lawyer has laid before the authorities a protest against the judge in question. Beck said it was shocking that German judges represented such absurdracist-opinions and demanded that an Antidiscrimination law which would protect the Sinti & Roma from this kind of racial discrimination, should be enacted. Further Beck those persons who on account of their race should begiven the legal possibility to protect themselves effectively within the frame-work of the law .
