Poland deports Roma

Warsaw / Poland (RNC Correspondent) 21.06.1996

The Roma in Warsaw have not disappeared, yesterday they could be seen begging for money with their children. However, this time more careful as they fled when a television team arrived on the scene and tried to film them. As a result of an action carried out by the police departments from Bielany and Bialoleke with the code-name `` Camp Liquidation`` the Roma had disappeared from the streets of Warsaw, they had gone into hiding, in man-holes, cellars, canalisation system and in the Railwaystation air-vent system. The Roma are afraid for their future resulting from a police action when they arrested 113 Roma who were camping under a bridge and who were deported to the Ukraine. The police suspect that the Roma had entered Poland illegally via the Ukraine and for this reason are deported back to the Ukraine and from there to Rumania. Police Spokesman Witold Gierald reported that the Roma spent Wednesday and Thursday in remand-arrest and that they were well cared for. It is not certain how many Roma from Rumania are at present in Warschau, however, the police assume a possible 200. Michal Mazurowski Mayor from Bielan said that the clean up the ex-Roma camp would be completed by the end of the week and that the rest of Roma possession which were left behind would be burnt. A further four women were found with six children under the bridge and when asked where they had slept, answered under the free heaven and our children were very cold. Yesterday afternoon a police convoy took the arrested Roma to the border post Medyce where they observed how the Roma left the bus-mainly women and children and how they back to the convoy escorts clutching their victual packets which they had been given for the long trip back to Rumania. The Roma stated that they had no wish to go back to Rumania and that they would again try to get back to Poland.
