Pop singer Chico Bouchikhi, leader of the French Gypsy Kings band, has been named goodwill peace ambassador by the UNESCO agency, the singer said on Saturday. In a letter to Bouchikhi, Federico Mayor, director-general of the Paris-based U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, paid tribute to the singers fight against intolerance, and the causes of racial or religious conflicts. Bouchikhi, 41, founder of the annual Gypsy Mosaic festival in the southern French town of Arles, had last year staged a Night of Tolerance in association with UNESCO. Bouchikhi said Mayor had asked him to organise concerts everywhere where there is a need for peace, and especially in Palestine, Israeland Bosnia., Bouchikhi grew up in the Roma community of the Camarguemarshland south of Arles.
