Tirana / Albania (RNC Agency) 15.02.1996

Two Albanians in the City port of Durres were sentenced to life-imprisonment and according to press-reports six others received limited sentences of imprisonment. Under the eight sentenced, some Roma, was a couple accused of selling their four month old son and their two year old Daughter for 8500 Liks ( about US.$ 100,). The group were further accused of kidnapping a three year old boy and selling him for 30.000Liks ( 250 $) all of the accused denied the charges and accordingt o leading Roma officials in Albania these charges were connected to a systematic campaign of hate against Roma. The Albanian Press has reported over the past five years what more than 32 children under the age of 12 were kidnapped by Roma . Unsupported suspicions claim that the children were butchered for their organs. The way that Roma are treated in Albania and the systematic assassination of their reputation is a vivid reminder of the terrible middle-ages,of witch-hunts and burning at the stake were order of the day. Albanians appear to have lost all sense of reality when they resort to tales of horror and do not shy from using even the most stupid stories of evil to defame the Roma. If this Albanian mood continues we Roma must fear for our lives-so said a leading Roma functionair who does not wish to be named for fear of being called to book.
